Genome Editing

Using “genome editing,” scientists now have a search-and-replace tool to permanently alter the genetic code of human sperm and egg cells. For a price (likely a large sum plus a great health insurance plan), we can perform molecular microsurgeries to eliminate HIV, Sickle Cell Disease, and Thalassemia. Unless the right policies and procedures are set in place, there is no guarantee that the people most in need of genome editing will actually benefit from this emerging technology. Imagine a world where only those who have access to healthcare have the opportunity to design their children. Genome editing could result in the ultimate form of social stratification. We need protective policy that will ensure the brave new world ahead includes Indigenous culture.
